Types of Care

Trauma Aware
Trauma aware organizations have become aware of how prevalent trauma is and have begun to consider that it might impact their clientele and staff. Most staff a) know what the term trauma refers to; and b) are aware that knowledge about the impact of trauma can change the way they see (and interact with) others. The impact of trauma is referenced in informal conversations among staff.

Trauma Sensitive
Trauma sensitive organizations have begun to: a) explore the principles of trauma-informed care (safety, choice, collaboration, trustworthiness, and empowerment) within their environment and daily work; b) build consensus around the principles; c) consider the implications of adopting the principles within the organization; and d) prepare for change.

Trauma Responsive
Trauma responsive organizations have begun to change their organizational culture to highlight the role of trauma. At all levels of the organization, staff begins re-thinking the routines and infrastructure of the organization and are implementing and tracking changes.

Trauma Informed
Trauma informed organizations have made trauma-responsive practices the organizational norm. The trauma model has become so accepted and so thoroughly embedded that it no longer depends on a few leaders. The organization works with other partners to strengthen collaboration around being trauma informed.

Trauma Specific
Trauma-specific services directly address trauma and its impact. For the purposes of this directory, any program, resource or activity qualifies as trauma-specific if it is known to be effective in helping to alleviate, reduce or prevent the negative effects of trauma on individuals, families or communities. While some interventions and treatments have had rigorous research to measure their effectiveness and are considered to be ‘evidence-based’, many others, though never formally evaluated, are found to be effective and helpful by those who use and promote them.

General Health & Wellness
General health and wellness services include a wide variety of resources. Though not specifically designed to address trauma, many of the services listed in this directory can help address problems and provide support for improving physical, emotional, social and spiritual health and well-being.
